Research Interests:
My current research interests are targeted to provide support for the planning, establishment and management of National Marine Conservation Areas (NMCAs) in Canada. Parks Canada plans to establish a system of NMCAs to protect and conserve representative examples of Canada’s oceans and Great Lakes environments. NMCAs are a type of marine protected area (MPA) intended to balance protection and ecologically sustainable use, encourage public understanding, appreciation and enjoyment, as well as, provide opportunities for education and research. NMCAs will provide a valuable new tool for marine biodiversity conservation. This is an exciting new field of research that has attracted considerable scientific and public attention. .

Our focus in Parks Canada is to develop innovative research and monitoring programs that will support future development and management efforts of NMCAs. Some of the research being conducted focus on questions such as where should MPAs be sited, how important are MPA networks, how large should MPAs be to meet both biodiversity conservation and coastal fisheries management needs, and how do MPAs function in terms of biodiversity conservation and fisheries management? Our current research is concerned with: 1) population dynamics of fish communities (specifically rockfish, genus Sebastes) in kelp and seagrass ecosystems; 2) cumulative impacts on intertidal mudflat and seagrass communities; 3) zoning of NMCAs; and 4) interactions of Northern abalone (Haliotis kamtschatkana) with its habitat, competitors and predators.

I have a very broad interest in marine ecological research that covers both temperate and tropical benthic marine ecosystems. My tropical research interests are focused on coral reef ecology, specifically: 1) coral community interactions; 2) coral community recovery following natural and anthropogenic perturbations; 3) the effects of eutrophication and other pollutants on the community structure and function of coral reef systems; and 4) seagrass ecology. I have conducted coral reef research both in the Caribbean and in the Indo-Pacific. My current interests focus on the development of coral reefs and coral communities in marginal reefal environments. This work is based on my work in the northeast part of Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh. This area offers significant research opportunities to advance our knowledge on reefal development in marginal settings, as well as to study coral/algal interactions.
