Updating Perspectives About Change and Conservation of Intertidal Biodiversity in the Northeast Pacific Region.

Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre  April 25-27, 2004

Many of you will already be in Bamfield for the Northwest Algal Symposium which precedes the Biodiversity Workshop. If not, please note that the workshop begins at 1:30pm on Sunday, April 25, 2004.

Travel Options:

a) Driving: The road, connecting Bamfield with Port Alberni is a rough 80 dirt km ride which takes approximately 1.5 hrs to drive. This is an active logging road, so be prepared to pull over if you encounter any logging trucks. The route is fairly well marked. Gasoline is infrequently available in Bamfield (two afternoons a week), so fill up in Port Alberni.

b) Ferry from Port Alberni: The Lady Rose sails to Bamfield on Saturday (the day before the workshop), leaving at 8:00 am SHARP. If you want to take the Lady Rose and require accommodation at BMSC for Saturday night, make sure to contact Colin Bates as soon as possible (there will be an additional CAN $51 charge). Bamfield Survival Notes

Bamfield is positioned in a rain forest and receives in excess of 3 m of rain per year; be prepared. There is one, limited access, ATM in Bamfield and it is recommended you bring cash. We have an outpost Red Cross Hospital (specializes in the removal of fish hooks), a multi-denominational church, a pub and two grocery stores with liquor outlets. Cellular phones work here-and-there in Bamfield but not on the Bamfield road. A flashlight is also a good idea.

Lodging

All participants will be staying on station in two-person rooms. Bedding is provided.

Meals

All meals will be served on station. If you have special dietary requirements (vegetarian, vegan, food allergies, etc.) please contact Colin Bates as soon as possible.
