Sessional Lecturer – 2023 Winter Term 1

Applications are invited for a part time Sessional Lecturer position in 2023 Winter Term 1.

SCIE 113 First-Year Seminar in Science - 3 credits. 
Course Description: Small-group experience where students study science in society, scientific process, and how to communicate scientific concepts. Enrolment limited to students in the B. Sc. program in Science.

Job Description: Primary duties include teaching in the course, working with TAs, developing assessments and grading assignments and exams. The term runs from September 5 – December 7, 2023.

We seek an innovative educator with demonstrated experience in teaching science topics using evidence-based and learning-centred pedagogical approaches, mentoring and managing teaching assistants, and engaging students in active learning classroom environment.

Candidates with a Ph.D. or with a Masters degree with relevant teaching experience at the post-secondary level in the area of general sciences will be considered.

The current salary for a 3-credit course is $10,000.

BIOL 209  Biodiversity of Algae, Fungi ad Brophytes - 4 credits. 
Course Description: Diversity, ecology, cell biology and evolutionary origins of multicellular eukaryotes, illustrated through mosses and liverworts; fungi and slime molds; and fresh water and marine algae.

Job Description: Primary duties include coordinating and teaching in the lab portion of the course, collecting fresh specimens for the labs and developing lab material, coordinating and prepping TAs, developing course assessments and grading lab assignments and exams. The term runs from September 5 – December 7, 2023.

We seek an innovative educator with demonstrated experience in teaching diversity in biology using evidence-based and learning-centred pedagogical approaches, mentoring and managing teaching assistants, and engaging students in active learning classroom environment.

Candidates should have a Ph.D. in a Biological Sciences discipline with excellent working knowledge in the areas of fungi, algae and bryophytes, and relevant teaching experience at the post-secondary level in the area of biological sciences.

BIOL 421  Plant-Microbe Interactions - 3 credits. 
Course Description: Biology and physiology of selected plant-microbe relationships. Impacts of plant-microbe relationships on society.

BIOL 111 Introdcution to Modern Biology - 3 credits. 
Course Description: Concepts fundamental to biological issues, such as the genetic basis of biological variation, evolution, infectious diseases, causes of cancer, population growth, and human effects on ecosystems

Job Description: Primary duties include teaching in the course, working with TAs, developing assessments and grading assignments and exams. The term runs from September 5 – December 7, 2023.

We seek an innovative educator with demonstrated experience in teaching biology using evidence-based and learning-centred pedagogical approaches, mentoring and managing teaching assistants, and engaging students in active learning classroom environment.

Candidates should have a minimum of M.Sc. in a Biological Sciences discipline and relevant teaching experience at the post-secondary level in the area of Biology. Experience in the area of facilitating discussions about Sex and Gender Inclusivity in Biology is an asset.

The current salary for a 3-credit course is $10,000.

BIOL 180 Thinking Like a Life Scientist- 2 credits. 
Course Description: Science as a process, the skills of scientists, and the exploration of a current biological challenge with a practicing UBC scientist.

Job Description: Primary duties include, teaching in the course, working with TAs, and active participation with the BIOL180 teaching team. The term runs from September 5 – December 7, 2023.

We seek an innovative educator with demonstrated experience in teaching introductory biology using evidence-based and learning-centered pedagogical approaches, mentoring and managing teaching assistants, and engaging students in active learning classroom environment.

Candidates should have a background in biology. Current and active engagement in biological research is required. Additional relevant teaching experience at the post-secondary level will be an asset.

The salary for teaching this course is $5,000.
